ON THE FENCE
-ANIMATED SHORT FILM-
This was my final thesis at ORT University to obtain my degree in animation and video games.
This project was made by my classmate and me. We divided responsibilities, I took the role of concept artist, background artist, assistant animator and screenwriter. As well as the making of the art book with all the art process details.
The software we decided to use was the following: Harmony (animation), Adobe illustrator, Adobe photoshop and Paint Tool Sai (illustration), Adobe After Effects and Adobe Premiere (video edition).

-KEY BACKGROUND FRAMES-
By placing key scenes on the same sheet, we can check if the style remains coherent throughout the whole short film. Also, we can evaluate if each scene conveys the emotions meant to be portrayed through subtle color and light variations.

-COMPOSITION, LIGHT & COLOR-
Composition is key since the first sketch. The position of the elements, size, distance from the camera, angle, etc.
Light and color are the second resources I use for composition and hierarchisation of the elements on the scene.
Here the light source comes from behind (one of my favorite light placements), adding a white line around the character figure which makes it pop out from the background.
As well as highlighting the character situation at the moment, when she finds out the real reason why the plant is being aggressive.
-RENDER TESTS- LIGHT & TEXTURE-

-GARDEN MAP-
When making the short film, a map of the setting was needed. Otherwise, the sense of a real space where the story is developing and the characters are living, would have been broken.
Whenever I had to draw a tree, a bush, a flower, etc. I had to check on the map where the action was taking place. Because, even though Merra's garden (where most of the scenes take place) is messy as hell, there is still an order inside that kaos. This order needs to be preserved whenever the camera moves, changes angle or points at another character, otherwise there would be no space logic in the film.

-ART BOOK-
"THE ART OF ON THE FENCE"
This book has the process making of the whole short film from pre-production to the final result. Sketches, concepts, color tests, composition, character design, model sheets, storyboards, animation process, inspiration, references and more.
Here is a quick flip through the artbook.
